What: Literacy Library Book Drive

When: July 31st and August 1st

Where: Union School Parking Lot, 200 N. Ann Arbor Street

As you know, with the recent funding issues for public schools, we are all looking for creative ways in which we can help the Saline Area Schools. Two local Girl Scouts are doing a community service project designed to help Kindergarten through 3rd grade elementary classrooms build up their literacy libraries. They are hosting a Drive-By Book Drive at Union School from 9am-1pm on both Saturday, July 31st and Sunday, August 1st.  Their goal is 6,000 books by the end of the project!  It only takes two easy steps to help out.

Step 1: Bring together all of your gently used youth books. The high end of the reading level they’re looking for would be Nancy Drew, Junie B. Jones, Hardy Boys, or book that are similar. Obviously, anything Dr. Seuss, Dora the Explorer, or books of a comparable reading level would be appreciated and used.

Step 2: Drive by Union School and pop the trunk open, they’ll do all the unloading for you!

All donations are greatly appreciated by the Girl Scouts, and also the hundreds of young students that will benefit for years to come. Thank you for supporting your community!    Please e-mail Laura Birchmeier with any questions at Birchmeierjandl@aol.com

On Wednesday twelve dedicated members of the Saline Middle School community met at 8 am to install sod in the new cafeteria courtyard.  With so many people there to help, the job went quickly and even though it was hot, we completed the work by 10 am.  It is a dirty job, but these folks got it done:  Amy Diehl, Emily Diehl, Sylvia West, Audrey West, Savannah West, Jay Graden, Josh Hynek, Rick Tanner, Jacob Tanner, Grant Fanning, Doug Bacon and David Raft.  Thanks to these fine people all middle schoolers will  be able to enjoy the courtyard this year and for many years to come.  The funds for this project were generated from the Middle School PTO and a CARES Grant.

SAS Community,

We will be holding a public forum on Tuesday, July 20th at 6:30pm at the Liberty School Media Center (7265 Saline-Ann Arbor Road) for community members to learn more about the upcoming $28 million Bond Proposal that is on the ballot for the August 3rd primary election.  We will share information regarding the goals of the proposal and the opportunity to access interest free bonds.  You can also find out more information on the Saline Area Schools Budget Blog.

Saline Community Education’s Summer Camp Program would like to thank Two-Twelve Arts Center for visiting camp this week. Two-Twelve Arts Center was the perfect fit for our “Artful Antics” themed week. The Two-Twelve Arts Center staff and volunteers engaged the campers in an artful activity called “Explosion Art”. The kids worked with their peers in groups to create their works of art in the courtyard at Liberty. For more information about Two-Twelve Arts Center please visit www.twotwelvearts.org. If you’d like more information about the Saline Community Summer Camp Program please contact Jen Barnard at (734) 944-8946.

On June 3rd and 4th Pooh Corner Preschool had 100 students graduate from their program.  Eight separate graduation ceremonies were held at Millpond Park.

Saline Football Families,
As summer draws closer, I am hoping to get a few very important dates out to everyone along with other critical information for the upcoming summer / season.  In an effort to provide this important information to everyone without missing people as we have in the past we are now making the parent meeting MANDATORY.

The 3 mandatory parent meeting dates have been set.  Every parent of a rising freshmen through senior football player will be expected to attendone of these 3 meetings prior to their son being eligible for the fall football season.  We have scheduled these dates around many other possible conflicts to make it possible for every athlete to be represented at one of the 3 meetings.

Please select a meeting date and location that fits your schedule and plan to attend.  We will be covering very important information that in years past many families have missed as they did not attend the parent meeting.  Remember, every athlete must be represented by at least one of their parents at one of these meetings.  Each meeting should last just over an hour.

Meeting dates:

Monday, June 7 – 7pm (MS Auditorium)
Wednesday, June 9 – 7pm (HS Auxiliary Gym)
Thursday, June 10 – 7pm (HS Auditorium)

Thank you in advance for making time for this important meeting during a very busy time of the year.  I am looking forward to the 2010 Football season!  Please pass this email on to anyone you may think is not on our email loop.  Should you have any questions please feel free to call or email me.

GO Hornets!
