The Egg

June 1st, 2010

The most memorable moment in the schoolyear so far is the Egg. It started as Mr. Foster had this Easter egg and acted like he was going to drop it onto one of us every once in a while. People started arguing if the egg was fake or real or hardboiled.one day Mr. Foster decided to end the debate. He asked whether the egg was fake, hardboiled, or real, and it was an equal debate. So, Mr. Foster chucked the egg at the wall and it exploded into a mess of egg.   -Carl T.

Every Day is a Laptop Day!

May 12th, 2010

Our team is proud to be part of the Heritage School  2:1 Laptop Program.  It has been so neat to have laptops at our disposal at all times!

We have been able to complete many neat technology projects.  Right now, my Reading class is using the website Animoto to make 30-second commercials that advertise the book they just finished.  We had several book groups within our classroom, and every group was either reading The Westing Game (mystery), Among the Hidden (Science Fiction), or The Castle in the Attic (Fantasy).

To make the commercials, the students first used digital cameras to shoot the photos for the video.  Then, using Animoto, the students created the 30-second spot.

Look for a few commercials here on the blog soon!

Michael’s most memorable moment this year.

April 23rd, 2010

The most memorable moment this year was when Mr. Foster threw an egg on the white board.  Mr. Foster had an egg in the class room for a day or two.  Everybody thought that it was fake because he kept throwing it up in the air.  And then one day he just threw it at the white board and that was the most memorable moment this year.

Me vs. Lindsy

April 22nd, 2010

One of my favorite thing from this year is when we had a limbo contest. I knew Lindsy would be in the last two but i never thought i would be too. Then  i WON!!!!!!!!!! I never would have thought that i would win. One more thing that was fun from this year is when me and Lindsy were in the bean bag toss. We both made 2 in a row so we battled off. its one point if you make it on the board and 3 if you make it i made 2 on the board and she didn’t make any on the first 2 shots then she made on it and she was in the lead my last throw if i get it on the board its a tie if i make it i win……..I MADE IT!!!  Those are two of my favorite things that happened this year.

What i am looking forward to on the toronto trip!!!

April 21st, 2010

The thing i am looking forward to the most is the CN tower. I am looking forward to this the most because is saw the video on the funky monkey website and it looks awsome! Also my parents went on the Toronto trip when they were in 6th grade and they said the CN tower is the best. So i can’t wait! But i might be a little scared.

The Science Museum

April 20th, 2010

I am looking forward to the Toronto trip in Canada especially the Science Museum. Most of the details in this famous museum are highly interesting, for example, the electricity ball. The Science Museum can help us learn a little more about nature or what we are familiar with. Now that in about a month we are going to be visiting a hand full of different locations. I will take the information I get and glue it in my head just in case we need it to talk about or explain what it means. I’m hoping that I will have a great time on the Toronto trip!

Sincerely,

Lindsay U.

Matthew’s Toronto Trip Blog

April 20th, 2010

The place that I am most excited to go in Toronto is the C.N. Tower. I have heard that the C.N tower is very tall, and has a fast elevator to get passengers and tourists to the top. The Tower is called the Canadian National tower, C.N tower for short. I am also excited about the elevator ride to the top of the C.N tower. In a video I watched, you can see the Toronto skyline from the top of the tower. I can’t wait to go to Toronto!!!!

What I am most looking forward to in Toronto

April 20th, 2010

The thing I am most looking forward to on our Toronto trip is the CN Tower. I think the CN Tower is going to be a blast because the view. Another thing is that were going to be in a glass elevator. We will get a birds eye view of Toronto and the other buildings. We will also learn interesting facts about when it was built and how much it cost. I think that this will be a great experience for me and my class because of all the things we will learn.

The Most Memorable moment of the 6th grade

April 20th, 2010

As most of the students know I came from another class room at the beginning of the school year. It couldn’t have went  any better, every one was supportive  and very nice to me. Mr. Foster has been one of the best teachers ever. He has a lot of fun with us in class and knows how to teach us in a way that we all have fun learning. He couldn’t have been any nicer to me during my transition.  I would have to say that the highlight for me thus far in 6th grade was joining his class. Thank you for reading my blog.

What I’m Most looking Forward to In Canada

April 20th, 2010

While we are in Canada I am looking forward to visiting the Blue Jay’s stadium. I am a huge baseball fan and have been playing for five years.  My goal is to visit all MLB baseball stadiums.  Also, my sister said this stadium is really fun.

I also can’t wait for visiting the Science center either.  I want to put my hand on the static ball and have my hair stick up.

I think that are class will have a lot of fun in Canada.

The egg “incident”

April 20th, 2010

The most memorable thing in Mr. Foster’s classroom this year for me was the ”egg toss”. Mr. Foster was playing with us, toying with eggs for a couple of days. Everybody was argueing whether it was hard-boiled, or real. Then one day we finally got to find out. Mr. Foster asked if we wanted to really know whether it was real or fake. We said we wanted to know so he chucked at the whiteboard. It broke open and splattered all over. We then unceremoniously got dismissed and we all went home.

What i am looking Most Forward to on the Toronto Trip

April 20th, 2010

What i am  looking most forward to on the Toronto trip is going to the Ontario Science Center. I Have seen a lot of cool pictures. It is also going to be our first stop on the trip. This is also cool because the first place we go to is all hands on so we can go have fun after being on a bus for 5 hours. There are going to be a lot of other cool things in Toronto but this one sounds really fun. That is what i am looking forward to on the Toronto trip!

What I’m Most Looking Foward to on the Toronto Trip

April 20th, 2010

What i’m most looking forward to on the Toronto trip is Niagra Falls. This is because i’ve never been there and I think it would be a great experince. Also if you don’t know i like almost anything that has to do with water. It’s a very breath taking land mark. Everybody says it’s huge but i have to see it to really bealive it. The opritunity to be at one of the worlds most amazing sights would be very amazing. Also this trip could be a nice rap up to our trip and let us reflect over all we learnd about Canada.

Hard Boiled or Hard Shelled?

April 20th, 2010

Mr. Foster’s classroom is always having something crazy going on.  My most memorable moment of all those crazy moments is when Mr. Foster threw an egg at the whiteboard.  Mr. Foster had been torturing us for days about this egg he decorated with sharpie marker.  The real debate in the classroom was whether or not the egg contained a gooey substance or a squishy substance inside.  Finally, after two days of being tormented about the mysterious egg, Mr.Foster gave in and the whole class got to know if they where right. Hard boiled or hard shelled?  With a challenging smile Mr.Foster hurled the egg against the hard whiteboard, and it splattered.  So, did you guess correctly?

Mr.Foster’s Haircut

April 20th, 2010

My favorite memory about 6th grade is his hair cut which I helped with. As you all know Mr.Foster made a bet that if we  get more than 1,000 cans the person who gets the most cans gets to shave Mr.Fosters head. That was me, I brought in 301 cans.  It was my most funnyest time I ever had in 6th grade. For about 2 months he was bald thanks to me. I hope there are more funny times like this one.

April 20th, 2010

The thing I’m looking forward to in Toronto is the Science Centre. The reason is because the slides Mr. Foster showed us were really cool. The electric ball looks cool too.  The presentations he showed us look cool.  I told my mom and she sounded excited. That’s why I’m excited to go to Toronto.

Niagara Falls

April 20th, 2010

The thing I’m looking forward to the most about the Toronto trip, is going to Niagara Falls. I want to go because I’ve heard they’re really beautiful. My sisters have both gone and said its really fun. I also have cousins in Ontario that say we’ll love it. I love waterfalls and go kayaking in them a lot. I’m really looking forward to going!

Kaylee’s Most Memorable Moment!

April 19th, 2010

My most memorable moment of 6th grade was when baby Madelyn was born. When we gave Mr. Foster the baby shower, it was definitely one of the highlights of this year!  Though I missed Mr. Foster during his time off, it was great for him to come back and tell all the great stories about her first few weeks at home.  Seeing all the pictures of her and watching her grow has been so much fun.  It was great to share this life changing experience with Mr. Foster.  Even though I will have many memories from 6th grade, baby Madelyn will be one of my favorites!

My Most Memorable Moment in Sixth Grade

April 19th, 2010

My most memorable moment of sixth grade would definitely be when Mr.Foster ate a bug.  He found a bug at a pond and put it in a jar.  Then he brought it in to the class to show everyone.  We all were wondering why the bugs were floating up and down in the water.  Mr.Foster then picked one up to see they would bite him.  Then out of nowhere he plopped it into his mouth.  It tasted so nasty, he couldn’t even read out loud.  Some people thought it was just raisins in pop.

What I am looking forward to on the Toronto trip

April 18th, 2010

What I am most looking forward to on the Toronto trip is the science center because it is all hands on. Some of the exhibits  I would like to see are the static electricity display and the room where there are trees growing. And also all of the really awesome stuff I will be able to see in the science center.  It is in another country so this trip is really exciting for me because I have never been out of the United States.  It will be a memorable experience exchanging U.S. currency into Canadian dollars. I am also looking foward to sharing this experince with my friends.

The thing I look foward to the most on the toronto trip

April 18th, 2010

The thing I look forward to themost on the toronto trip is the science centre. At first it didn’t sound so great. But after Mr. Foster explained it, it sounded much better. One thing that looks great is the ball of electrity. It looks funny the way it makes your hair stand on end. That’s what I’m most looking forward to on the 6th grade toronto trip.

The Toronto Trip!

April 18th, 2010

What I am most looking forward to on our Toronto trip is the Science Centre. Mr. Foster has recently shown us pictures of this wonderful building, and I am really looking forward to it. An exhibit I cannot wait to see is the ball of electricity.  I don’t think my hair will stick up really far.  Another great thing about the Science Centre is that everything is hands-on. I think This trip is going to top them all on my list. The bottom line is, there are a lot of fun places to visit in Toronto, but the place that I am looking forward to the most is the Science Centre!

Memorable Moment

April 18th, 2010

My most memorable moment in sixth grade is when Mr.Foster threw an egg at the wall. The days before, Mr.Foster was tossing the egg around, and everyone thought it was hard boiled. I guess Mr.Foster wanted to prove us wrong, because right before the bell rang, he threw it at the wall and… you guessed it, it went splat! It is the most memorable moment because I was really surprised that he did it. I also think It’s memorable because he hasn’t done something like that before. All in all, Mr.Foster throwing the egg at the wall was definitely the most memorable moment in sixth grade.

What I am most looking forward to in Toronto

April 18th, 2010

I am most looking forward to going to the Science Centre in Toronto. I’m looking forward to that because everything is hands-on. Also it looks like it is very interesting to do and to learn about. Therefore, everything is well done and makes it look interesting! The other part that I am looking forward to is that we can go anywhere with our  group whenever we want. That is why I’m looking forward to the Science Centre. Can’t wait!

~Lauren W.

My most memorable moment of sixth grade.

April 17th, 2010

My most memorable moment of the sixth grade is when Mr. Foster had is head shaved by some of our class.  Mr. Foster made a bet with the class saying that we could not get over a certain number of cans for the food drive.  Unfortunate for Mr. Foster, our class raised more cans than our original goal.   It was really exciting to see all of his hair dropping to the carpet.  I was really lucky because I got to shave a little bit of Mr. Foster’s hair off.  It was funny to see Mr. Foster with out any hair, but I bet it made it easier for him to wash it.   Sixth grade has been a great year for me and Mr. Foster made it all happen.

Emilys Most Memorable Moment

April 16th, 2010

The most memorable moment this year is when Mr.Foster threw an egg at the white board. Mr.Foster brought in an egg for two days and he kept asking us is the egg raw, plastic, or hard boiled. On the second day  near the end of school he took a survey.  Who thinks this is raw? Some kids raised their hands. Who thinks its plastic?  Again some kids raised their hands Now who thinks hard boiled? He turns around takes the egg and chucked it at the white borad. Everyone was shocked! Now he is still having trouble washing egg off the white board.

The Egg

April 16th, 2010

My most memorable moment of sixth grade was when Mr. Foster threw an  egg at the whiteboard and the egg exploded all over the whiteboard.  All week long he kept tossing an egg around. Some kids thought it was fake and some kids thought it was real.  Then on Friday he threw the egg and it exploded everywhere. Everyone in the class was shocked! I guess the egg was real!!!!!

Brittney’s Most Memorable Moment of 6th Grade

April 15th, 2010

My most memorable moment of 6th grade is probably when my teacher, Mr. Foster threw a egg at our whiteboard. Yes a real egg. You see for two days Mr. Foster had been torching us by bringing in a egg to school and having us take a vote each day if we thought the egg was hard boiled, a regular egg, or was just plastic. The second day, almost right before the bell rang Mr. Foster said, ” Who thinks the egg is real?”we thought this was just another vote, so we raised our hands and voted. We we were finished Mr. Foster said, ” Want to find out?” At that moment he turned around and threw the egg at the whiteboard………and it really was real. Mr. Foster and some of the kids helped clean it up. Some of us were just in shock that we couldn’t speak. Just today Mr. Foster proclaimed that the whiteboard still wasn’t working right. That has definitely been the most memorable moment of 6th grade

Funky Monkey Technology Update

March 31st, 2010

Hello Parents,

Implementing technology into the classroom has been something that all students have enjoyed this year.  In the final trimester, we plan on taking things to an even higher level.  Your student has been or will be directly involved in many activities and projects that involve technology.

Below is an update on how we’ll be integrating technology into the classroom as the third trimester progresses:

2:1 Laptop Program
For the final trimester, our team has the opportunity to use 30 laptops.  My homeroom began by making 30-second book commercials using Animoto.  Our entire team began using them by completing a Canada Webquest through a created website and other components of the Internet.  We have many more exciting things planned for the laptops throughout this entire trimester.

The Wii Smooth Board

Using Smart Boards (front boards that can connect to the Internet, project, erase automatically, save files, etc.) in the classroom can assist learning in many ways.  However, these boards can be very costly.  Using Nintendo Wii and Blue Tooth technology, a Wii Smooth Board can be created at little cost.  Utilizing Blue Tooth capabilities, a Wii remote, loaded software, and a projector can turn any screen into a Smart Board.

One of my students filmed me showcasing the Wii Smooth Board.  Please click here to view a video on how this will work inside our classroom.

Country Internet Quizzes

At the Parade of Latin American Countries, the students were giving out business cards with directions on how to view their created Country Quizzes that are available for view on Hornet Tube.  These quizzes were created on a program called Keynote, which is similar to Power Point.  The students did a wonderful job on these, and if you have not had time to view a few yet, please feel free.  Here are a few quick directions on how to view:

Once at Hornet Tube, click on Categories, then Heritage – then your choice of Central America/Caribbean/South America Quizzes

Classroom Blog

Mr. Foster’s  Classroom Blog continues to function very well.  Same update as before – not one disrespectful or inappropriate blog or statement yet by a student.  I anticipate it remaining this way as our students have had very high expectations set for them, and they continue to meet them.  Check the blog often for current updates on our classroom, team, and school.

Spelling City
Spelling City is an online website that offers many opportunities for students to learn and study their weekly spelling words.  Each week, I enter in our spelling words and the students can actually use our assigned list.  The site offers so many neat activities.  Click here to visit Mr. Foster’s Spelling City site.

A Final Word

As part of Saline Area Schools, we are very fortunate to have these kinds of opportunities.  Exposing students to worthwhile and safe technology can be very valuable as they prepare for future endeavors.  Thank you for all of the support you have given from home that involves using technology.  I do realize using the Internet, printing documents, etc. can be a pain at times.  Your support is much appreciated.

Thank you for your time, and I hope your student is enjoying using these and other kinds of technology.

Michigan State football

March 26th, 2010

MSU had a good football season last year, but Spartan fans want a better one.  We would all  love to see MSU beat Uof M this year.  With the game at the Big House that gives Uof M the home advantage.  But hopefully MSU’s new freshman can shine some light on the team.To get the big team a great win. We will all see what MSU team will look like with some new freshman i could be a long season or a great seaeon. We will all see what will happen on game day and MSU fans will hope for the win.

The Parade of Latin American Countries

March 26th, 2010

Last evening was the conclusion of The Parade of Latin American Countries.  It’s been a couple of fun months, all concluding with some great presentations by our students.

Our students have created Keynote quizzes, research papers, travel brochures, persuasive letters, maps, and many other worthwhile projects through this process.  It’s been a long road, but so much success has been achieved.

Reader’s Theater – Baseball Edition

March 26th, 2010

For the past few weeks in Literature, we have been doing Reader’s Theater.  The kids have had a great time learning their lines with their teams and then performing.  Next week, we are going to making book commercials using Animoto.com.

Visit our Language Arts website for a video made with Animoto that showcases our latest round of Reader’s Theater.

March Madness- West Virginia Mountineers

March 24th, 2010

First I just wanted to say that I know that my friends and I are very shocked at Kansas’ loss. My team though is having issues also. With Truck Bryant out for the season with a broken foot, the coach, Bob Huggins, has a few decisions to make; use the five-forward line up or start junior Joe Mazzulla as point guard. Although Mr. Foster thought that it would be  Kansas vs. West Virginia in the Championship, with all the wins and losses that are going on it could be anyones game. GO WEST VIRGINIA!

-Brittney K.

GO XAVIER!

March 23rd, 2010

Go Xavier! Xavier is so going to win this tournament. All the other teams will be all like,” oops, I lost the ball.” Then Xavier going to be all like,” shoot, and score!” Kansas State doesn’t even have a chance against Xavier in the next round!   Xavier is going all the way!

Parade of Countries Coming Soon!

Keynote Country Quizzes

March 6th, 2010

Our students have been working very hard on a difficult technology project in Social Studies. For the past few weeks, all students have been creating Country Quizzes using the Mac program Keynote. For those not familiar, Keynote is very similar to Microsoft’s PowerPoint.

About two months ago, every student was assigned one country to study in-depth. These Country Quizzes were just one of many mini-projects that the students completed. Overall, I have been very impressed with how hard the students have worked on these Keynote projects.  Not only did they have to create the Keynote presentation, but they also added their own sound recordings to it.  These are very much like a podcast with full narration.  All students had a lot of fun creating these projects.

Using iPod Touches

February 28th, 2010

Using technology in the classroom is something that I’m very passionate about.  Sure, there are kinks that always need to be worked out, but exposing students to different kinds of technology within learning can be very rewarding.

We have been given a great opportunity by the technology department.  They have purchased ten iPod Touches for classroom usage, and we are the lucky ones that get to try them out first!

During the past few weeks, my Math class has been using them to practice their math facts.  We have always had a school improvement goal of implementing a math facts program into the classroom, and who knew that an iPod Touch can be used to meet that goal?

We have also been using them to practice our spelling.  There are many cool spelling apps that allow the user to actually put in their own spelling words.  You can also play spelling games, etc.

All in all, as you might expect, the students are thrilled to be using them.  It has been a positive and worthwhile experience.  We now know that there are educational apps out there that are fun. Several students are rushing home each night to download our educational apps on their own iPod Touches or their parents’ iPhones.

Below are a few photos of us using them.

Ski trip

February 21st, 2010

Last weekend I went skiing at Shanty Creek. It was a blast, we were there for three days but we only skiied for two days. Me and my sister both invited  a friend so we had to take two cars. The first day we went on the easy hills but the second day we went on the bigger ones. My sister didn’t like the big hills even though shes 15 but I think they were fun.

College basketball

February 20th, 2010

As the final four is right around the corner its been a great year for college basketball. The standings have been tight and there has been a lot of upsets. Even the big ten has a team in the the top 5 which is not MSU,  it’s Prude. Prude has been a very quite team this year but really snuck up in the standings. In the big ten this year there have been a lot of twist and turns.  MSU in 1st ,  Prude in 2nd and Ohio Stae in 3rd, its been a year.  As I said final four is right around the cornor  I think its going to be tight, espicially with #1Kansas  and #2 Kentucky its should be a great battle to watch. My picks for the final is #1 Kansas and #4 Prude because Prude is a great  team and hard to beat and Kansas has a great bench as well. We all will be watching the big games in Indianapolias as march is just about to start. Thanks for reading my blog.

Parade of Latin American Countries

February 19th, 2010

In Mr. Foster and Mrs. Stevenson’s class we have been doing a very interesting social studies unit. We are studying Latin America but we each were assigned our own country. We have been studying our countries for awhile now and have made a hand-drawn map, an outline of research, a research paper, and a few others. Right now we are working on a keynote quiz for after our oral presentation, a travel brochure, and a persuasive letter. We are stretching the parade of countries all the way up until the end of March, where we will give a speech dressed as a person from our country. We are enjoying our studies and having fun with the project!

Super Bowl 44

February 15th, 2010

On February 7th, the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts took charge for the Lombardi Trophy. For the first half the teams pretty much has had back to back touchdowns. Then, when the second half came along Peyton Manning threw an interception. This was what ruined the game for the Colts. When the Colts got the ball again they tried to drive down the field, but that ended in an epic fail. So with about 30 seconds left to go the Saints started to celebrate and the Clots go home crying.images-11

The Mi Zarape Trip

February 9th, 2010

There are so many ways that I could say this! Mi Zarape was the best restaurant I’ve had ever been to. My class was in Social Studies (S.S) when Mr. Foster announced that soon our whole entire class would be going on a trip. All of us were RED in the face once we heard about this news. So lets cut to the chase.

Okay so we’re here! HIP HIP HOORAY! we all walk in with surprise choosing our tables. A minute later we all start chowing down on some delicious, warm mexican chips and dipping them in the dipping sauce. The staff that work at Mi Zarape’ bring out the “HUGE” treys of food. Everybody starts clapping and Mr. Foster calls on different tables one by one and everybody gets their choise of foods. So many yums! and mmms! I couldn’t believe the taste of those cheese enchiladas. I also liked the rice. A while later everybody’s stomachs are full and I move to Matthew P.’s table just to get some laughter out of me. We had a great time. Thank you for reading this. I really wish we could go back.

Dream Big Dreams!

February 6th, 2010

Friday, February 5th was a magical day in our classroom.  As you may have already heard, one of my students, Matthew P., is running for President.  It’s a huge dream, but Matthew is receiving much press for his efforts.

Mr. Kerr made an appearance in our classroom on this day to tell us a story:

While down in Florida, retired Heritage School teacher Hal Morningstar had an opportunity to catch a Barack Obama speech in Tampa, Florida.  He happened to have a copy of Matthew’s article from annarbor.com and gave it to a represenative to potentially have signed.  Well, not only did the President sign it, he also read it!  Then, he scribed “Dream big dreams, Matthew!” and signed his name.

Heritage School principal Mrs. Rosen-Leacher and Matthew’s mother all stood in our classroom as Mr. Kerr told this story and presented Matthew with the signed article.

We all then had some powerful discussions about how children should not be afraid to dream big and the power of a hand-written note or letter.  As you can see, it was a magical day in our classroom!

Below is a photo of (left to right) Mr. Kerr, Matthew’s mother, Mrs. Rosen-Leacher, and Matthew P.

My favorite subject is science because, all of the students and I get to create activities and have fun doing them. Science is when we learn about our envirement and the specific things that occur in our lives that we need to know about. I appreciate the events that we do so I can understand it better.  Recieveing and looking at the little things is my absolute favorite part of Science!

My Favorite Book

January 19th, 2010

My favorite subject this year is spelling. Spelling is my favorite subject because it’s pretty easy. The homework is pretty easy once you learn how to do the skill. The hardest part is the test which isn’t hard at all.

My favorite subject

January 18th, 2010

My favorite subject is literature. This is because I really like how Mr Foster gives the students a choice on what they read for book groups. My last year’s teacher assigned us a book and that’s what we were going to read, but Mr. Foster lets us have a say in what we are to read. And also , who wouldn’t want to just read books all day! Too bad we only have around twenty minutes in the entire school day, but we can also read at our house. That’s why literature is my favorite subject.

Matthew’s Favorite Subject

January 18th, 2010

Reading is my favorite subject. I enjoy reading because it can make me feel like I am a part of the book.  I like to predict what is going to happen next, and see if I am right or wrong.  Reading lets me visualize what is happening in the book. I like to visualize and paint a picture in my head. Through reading, I can connect what I am reading with events happening around the world,  to another book, or to events in my life.  Through reading and visualizing, I can visit places I never thought I could!

Savannah’s favorite subject!

January 18th, 2010

My favorite subject is English, it is my favorite subject because i get to learn about different kinds of sentences everyday! its like there is a million kinds of sentences! i also like english because Mr.Foster makes it fun! We get to write the answers to the questions that are in the book on white boards and i just like white boards for some reason. And we have a packet with all the english skills that we do in it and everyday we have to do them and on each skill there is bonus triangle and Mr.Foster has a “rule book”that has the rules for each skill in it. And if we are lucky we get to remove problems thanks to the “rule book”. ( mr.foster says there is a rule book that nobody is allowed to look in because its “top secret” but the truth is he just makes them up he just wont admitt it!) And this is why english is my favorite subject.

My favorite subject is English/Writing.  I like this subject because I love spicing up sentences with adjectives and other descriptive words.  Although the editing takes a long time, the end result is always worth it.  I also like reading and when I read the different style of  an author’s writing I learn more exciting ways to write.   I hope to be a writer when I grow up!

My favorite subject is social studies, one of the reasons that its my favorite subject is that I like to learn history so thats  perfect. The other reason is that we do big projects that are really a challenge, like the parade of  latin american countries the one we are working on now. We also use the computers alot wich I love to do. The last and final reason is because I have Mr. Foster and he rocks as a teacher!!!

Challenging subject

January 18th, 2010

The most challenging subject this year for me has been science.  Science can be very confusing to me and hard to keep on task.  I feel that  they give us a lot of homework in science, most of the time  it is very hard to talk to the text and finish a whole packet in just two days.  That is the reason why science is the most challenging subject for me this year.

My favorite subject in 6th grade  is Social Studies. I like Social Studies because we get to learn about other countries and regions.  Social Studies is a lot of fun in our class because, usually, we get to work with a group or partner.  I like how we learn about the capitals and the population of each country.  In our class we do a big project and have fun with it.

Sully’s Favorite Subject

January 18th, 2010

I would have to say my favorite subject would be literature. I like it because we get introduced to new books, and talk about them in book groups. (It’s fun to talk to people about the book you’re reading.) I also like Literature because when Mr.Foster reads to the class, you get to all listen to the book and, (In this case,) solve the mystery together. I really love to read, and think Literature is a great way to get kids who don’t read much, start reading! Also, doing the bookmarks, and T-charts help people, (including me,)  climb the reading ladder. All in all, Literature is a great subject to me, and other students.

Jordan’s Favorite Subject

January 18th, 2010

My favorite subject in school is reading. When you read its like you’re somewhere else where no one can reach you. Its like taking an adventure but not having to move. I like this feeling beacause it can take you away from whats happening around you. Things can happen in books that would never ever happen here, and sometimes things happen in books that you can relate to. There are just so many possibilities for things to happen. It can also spark an interest to learn about different subjects and topics. For example, when I read the book 13 Little Blue Envolopes I got really interested in Greece. Because of that I started reading Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. This really got me interested in Greek mythology causing me to read other books on that subject. The chain can continue until you are on a new topic all together. I think with an open mind and a big imagination anything is possible in books.

Around the World

January 17th, 2010

My favorite subject is Social Studies because Mr. Foster gives us lots of fun things to do in class.  For example, we are in the process of studying our own Latin American country for the Parade of Latin American countries.  We have been researching our country, working on maps of our country, and starting our Keynote presentation. I think Keynote has been one of my favorite things we’ve done so far, because not only do I get to expand my knowledge on my country, Guatemala, I also get to share it with other people.  Mapdemoneum was another thing I greatly enjoyed because we got to learn many things about gepgraphy, and have a friendly competition, as well.  Our culture portfolio was also a fun project, because we got to put so much information into one small packet, but do so in fun ways we enjoyed.  So, overall, Social Studies is a highlight to my week, and something I look forward to in school.  I am excited about our Parade of Latin American countries and our future learning about places in our world.

My favorite subject in school is math because it is sometimes challenging to me. Before this year, math was easy for me. However, I am now in pre-algebra and it harder. I like Mrs. D’Andrea as a teacher because she explains things very well and makes math easier to learn. I really like using different variables in different places. I have enjoyed everything I have learned so far and would like to keep on learning.  I look forward to math every morning in school.

Rachel’s Favorite Subjects

January 15th, 2010

My favorite thing that I learned in 6th grade so far was doing a gargoil in art. I liked doing gargoils because we could make them anything we wanted and we would use clay and alot of neat stuff. My favorite subject in 6th grade is probably spelling. I like doing spelling because when we have a test on Friday, I usually get an A+ on it. The most challenging subject in 6th grade would probably be P.E. It’s kills my side when we have to run for a long time. Now I know that it means that it’s working, but it is just hard to breathe with pain in my side.

My favorite subject is social studies because we get to do alot of fun projects. One of my favorites was a culture portfolio. Once we were done completing the culture portfolios we had to take a test. It was an interesting test because it was an interview. Our table partner was the person we were interviewing and we both had 9 questions. We are doing another fun project in social studies called The Parade of Latin American Countries. The First thing we had to do with this project is research and notes. Down the road we will be doing a hand drawn map, a keynote quiz, a travel brouchure, a persuasive letter, a written report, an oral presentation, and a Carribean map. These are just a few reasons why social studies is my favorite subject!

My Favorite Subject

January 12th, 2010

My favorite subject is spelling. I like spelling because it’s an easy subject, and because I’m kind of good at it. In my class we had a spelling bee to see who would  represent our team at the school bee. i was one one of the last  four. We could only send three people, so one of us had to get out. It was my second to last word and the girl next to me got out.  I was one of the three…..,but then Mrs. Stevenson told me that I had to spell the word magazine.  I have always spelled that word wrong and it was no surprise to me when I lost. But I’m still good at spelling and the homework is like practice for my next spelling bee. That’s why spelling is my favorite subject.               ~Brittney K.

Seasonal Stories at Houghton School

December 17th, 2009

On Wednesday, December 9th, our students had the opportunity to visit Houghton School to read their created seasonal stories.  It was the culmination of weeks of hard work for our sixth graders. It was a process that included brainstorming tasks, prewriting activities, revising and editing, typing using Microsoft Word, and finally illustrating.

Once at Houghton, our students had the opportunity to read their stories about ten times total to different kindergartners.  It was a blast and all of our students did such a wonderful job.  If you haven’t seen your student’s completed story/book, please make sure to ask them about it and take a peek!

Seasonal Stories

December 3rd, 2009

For our seasonal stories we had to think of six ideas about wintertime then pick one idea that you liked the best.   Then we had to write a rough draft and get it fixed by six people and your parents.   After that we typed the story. Finally, we started and finished our drawings. Today we picked a color for our front and back page then got it laminated. In my story ( Oh No! Rudolph’s Nose!) it took hours of fun but hard work to finish my book. Overall this was so far a very fun project.

Winter Stories

November 30th, 2009

We have been doing a fun project in writting the last 3-4 weeks. We have been making our winter stories. All of them are very different, from strories about santa, to real life traditions, we all have a different story to share. For example my story is about Santa losing  a ski on his sleigh. The best part is that we don’t  just get to take them home , we also get to read them to younger kids. I cant wait to see the final book when it is done!!!

Operation Christmas Child – Classroom Participation!

November 19th, 2009

One of my students, Kaylee, opened the doors to participating in Operation Christmas Child on this very blog a few weeks ago.  She really inspired me and our entire classroom help those in need.

Operation Christmas Child is a program operated through Samaritan’s Purse, an organization that provides international relief.  Within Operation Christmas Child, individuals pack a decorated shoe box with school supplies, toiletry items, and toys for children in need.

At the beginning of the week, we all brainstormed the kinds of things that a child in need may be wishing for.  Within days, we were all bringing in items to help.  Today, Thursday, November 19th, we completed our boxes.

I am so proud of the students and how hard they worked to create the boxes.  I have attached some photos below of the boxes and the creation of them.  If you are interested in making one yourself, please visit the following website:

Early Civilization Presentations

November 12th, 2009

In Social Studies lately, we have been learning about the early civilizations in Latin America.  These civilizations include the Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas.  Throughout our studies, the students actually become a member of one of these three civilizations.

Once a member, they were one of ten total students also in that grouping.  They then had to create a wide variety of projects, and then present them to the other civilizations.  Groups created Power Points, used the new Elmo machines, made maps, created and acted out skits, made posters, and made physical models of something relating to the civilization.

Below is a photo of some maps and posters that were created.  As you can see, the students did a great job!

SPOIL ALERT!!! FREAK THE MIGHTY!!!

October 31st, 2009

It is such a tragic ending in Freak the Mighty. I’m so disappointed that Freak had to die. But then again if he didn’t there would be no point to the story. I really love the story and am ashamed that something similar to that happened to that in real live. Over all the story was a fantastic book.

Red Ribbon Week and Other Notes – Mr. Foster’s Update

October 25th, 2009

Hello everyone!

We are all really enjoying our blog so far this year.  Everyone has had an opportunity to blog about their favorite book, and now the students are going to be doing many different kinds of posts.

Next week is Red Ribbon Week here at Heritage School.  Teachers were asked to make a video showcasing something they enjoy doing and proving that one does not need drugs or alcohol to have a good time.  One thing that I enjoy doing is Speed Stacking.  Here is a video from Hornet Tube that I created for Red Ribbon Week.  It involves some students, and we had a great time making it.

http://video.salineschools.com/play.php?vid=973

On another note, we have had two cadet teachers with us this year, and they have been very helpful.  Trip and Kristine, from Saline High School, are both thinking of entering the wonderful world of teaching.  Both would be great assets to the profession.

Have a great week, and I hope you are enjoying our blog!

Wisconsin

October 23rd, 2009

Wisconsin is a very beautiful when it comes to that big river with a speed boat and a huge waterfall! I was in Wisconsin and I was on a 2 hour speed tour and at the end of the tour the guy who wasn’t thinking almost made all of us die. I was crying and I was yelling at the guy that he should be fired! really he should. Anyway I want to the most expensive resturaunt in the world! it was really beautiful. I had spaghetti and choclate milk I think? and then at the end of the meal we got these steamed towlets they smelled really nice then my nose got disturebed so I didn’t like it that much. The resrturaunt had a dress code. It was that nice. There was another resturaunt it was called the Mexican Rose. It had a view of that vicious waterfall. By the end of the day we went to Noah’s Ark! It’s a big waterpark and thing I was most scared of  was the water slides but then I went on one of them and I totally enjoyed it . I couldn’t stop it was a blast! Did I menchon that  I was camping in the Wisconsin Dells and I played this weird ball on a string game. It was really fun cause I kept on winning. After that day we went into town and there was a fair going on. We went to the fair, but we didn’t do anything. My dad thought it was a rip-off when he knew wehad to pay for  the tickets. He thought it was “too expensive”  Talk about the chocolate he eats now that is expensive. Oh also there is an awesome part of Wisconsin and that is the best resturaunt called Moose Cheese or Cheesey Moose I dont know, but everything there is made of cheese. There is tons to choose from like: pizza, spaghetti, and more. MMMM I can already taste it.

Thankyou for reading.

Operation Christmas Child

October 22nd, 2009

Operation Christmas Child is a project that sends shoe boxes to needy children throughout the world.  Last year over 8 million shoe boxes were delivered to kids in over 160 countries.   My church participates in this project every year.  Last year we packed over 230 shoe boxes.  This year we are going for 500!  Things you put in a box are hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, washcloth, comb), small toys, school supplies (pencils, eraser, markers, crayons, rulers, glue sticks, notepads) and other things too.  I like packing boxes because I am sharing something with someone who has nothing.  Many of the children live in dangerous and scary situations, and many of them have been affected by natural disasters.  Sometimes it is the only Christmas present they have ever gotten.    Boxes are delivered all over the world by car, train, boat, plane, even elephants!   It is fun to think about where my box will end up and whose hands it will eventually be in.  Would you like to pack a box? I can tell you how!  See me if you or your family are interested in information about this project!

My favorite book is Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Last Straw.   So far I have read the entire series and the first and the second book twice.  I like it because it is a very funny book and it is short and easy to read.  In The Last Straw, the main character is Greg Heffly, the wimpy kid.   He has a best friend named Rowley who he hangs out with, and two brothers named Roderick and Manny.  The story centers around the daily life of Greg while at home, school and other places.  The book is fiction, but it could easily be non-fiction if Greg came to life from a drawing to a real person.  The author of the book, and the series, is Jeff Kinney.

Kaylee’s Favorite Book!

October 4th, 2009

My favorite book of all time is ”The Princess Bride”.  The author is S. Morgenstern, and I read the ” good parts” version  abridged by William Goldman.  It isn’t your everyday fairytale, and it’s filled with love, passion, action, suspense, and life lessons.  It is a book that really teaches you to believe in the impossible with its clever writing.  The book is about Westley and Buttercup and their long trip to happily ever after.  Along the way there are sharks, a giant, The Cliffs of Insanity, a miracle man, a fire swamp, ROUS’s (Rodent Of Unusual Size), snow sand, an evil prince,  sword fights, The Zoo of Death,  and action galore!  (Boys – be forewarned – there is some romance thrown in.  Girls – expect a little pain and suffering too!)  Some of you may have seen the movie based on this book, but you’re missing out if you don’t READ the book.  There is a lot more character development, back stories, and details that weren’t included in the movie.   If you read this book, you’ll now exactly what to say if someone says to you,”Hello.  My name is Inigo Montoya.  You killed my father.  Prepare to die…”

Jordan’s Favorite Series

September 30th, 2009

My favorite book series would have to be Percy Jackson and the Olympians! It is about a boy who is twelve years old, and learns he is a demigod.  A demigod is half-mortal and half-god. So he starts attending Camp Half-Blood (a camp for all demigods.) There he must train to fight the mythological monsters that turn out to be real. When he visits the oracle of delphi and learns he must go on a quest, he and his friends must find a way to stop a betraying friend, a vengeful titan, and save one thing that means so much to Percy. In this five  book series you will hanging by your shirt tag at every book. (The Lightning Thief, The  Sea of  Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of  the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian)

Nicole’s favorite book series

September 23rd, 2009

My favorite books are in the Inkheart series. There are three books in this series. This series is fantasy. I’m not really fond of fantasy, but these books really sweep you into their world of printed pages, thats what I like the most. The main character is Meggie Folchart. She is a twelve year old girl who lives with her dad, who she calls Mo. Her mother went away when she was three, while her dad was reading a book called Inkheart. When Mo reads aloud, he has a voice as sweet as sugar and as powerful as the wind in a tornado, which gives him the power to read people and things in and out of books. It is that night when Meggie’s mom went away, did Mo swear he would never read aloud ever again. Why? Well, you’ll just have to read Inkheart by Corneillia Funke. The minute you pick the book up, you get swept into the world of paper and ink, so called the Inkworld, and you can’t leave it.

My Favorite Book

September 18th, 2009

During the next few weeks, we will all be blogging about our favorite books. I thought I would take the opportunity to do the same.

My favorite book is Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. It is a story about a young boy trying to do the right thing by teaching others how to act and live appropriately. However, he has his struggles too, which he must overcome. Along the way, he ends up breaking records and becomes legendary for all of his feats. It’s a story that really keeps the reader at the edge of his/her seat because Maniac is constantly ending up in a new location.

You’ll have to check it out; it’s won countless awards and continues to be one of the most popular books among young readers.
