THe Most Challenging Subject

January 17th, 2010

Pre-algebra

The most challenging subject for me is pre-algebra. It’s really hard because we change alot. We went from fractions to geometry then solving equations and inequalities. Its’ been very hard to keep up.

Around the World

January 17th, 2010

My favorite subject is Social Studies because Mr. Foster gives us lots of fun things to do in class.  For example, we are in the process of studying our own Latin American country for the Parade of Latin American countries.  We have been researching our country, working on maps of our country, and starting our Keynote presentation. I think Keynote has been one of my favorite things we’ve done so far, because not only do I get to expand my knowledge on my country, Guatemala, I also get to share it with other people.  Mapdemoneum was another thing I greatly enjoyed because we got to learn many things about gepgraphy, and have a friendly competition, as well.  Our culture portfolio was also a fun project, because we got to put so much information into one small packet, but do so in fun ways we enjoyed.  So, overall, Social Studies is a highlight to my week, and something I look forward to in school.  I am excited about our Parade of Latin American countries and our future learning about places in our world.

Lauren’s Favorite Subjest

January 15th, 2010

My favorite subject in school is math because it is sometimes challenging to me. Before this year, math was easy for me. However, I am now in pre-algebra and it harder. I like Mrs. D’Andrea as a teacher because she explains things very well and makes math easier to learn. I really like using different variables in different places. I have enjoyed everything I have learned so far and would like to keep on learning.  I look forward to math every morning in school.

Rachel’s Favorite Subjects

January 15th, 2010

My favorite thing that I learned in 6th grade so far was doing a gargoil in art. I liked doing gargoils because we could make them anything we wanted and we would use clay and alot of neat stuff. My favorite subject in 6th grade is probably spelling. I like doing spelling because when we have a test on Friday, I usually get an A+ on it. The most challenging subject in 6th grade would probably be P.E. It’s kills my side when we have to run for a long time. Now I know that it means that it’s working, but it is just hard to breathe with pain in my side.

My favorite subject is social studies because we get to do alot of fun projects. One of my favorites was a culture portfolio. Once we were done completing the culture portfolios we had to take a test. It was an interesting test because it was an interview. Our table partner was the person we were interviewing and we both had 9 questions. We are doing another fun project in social studies called The Parade of Latin American Countries. The First thing we had to do with this project is research and notes. Down the road we will be doing a hand drawn map, a keynote quiz, a travel brouchure, a persuasive letter, a written report, an oral presentation, and a Carribean map. These are just a few reasons why social studies is my favorite subject!

Math is my favorite subject in school because we get to do fun things with fractions, decimals, and story problems.  Its cool because I have already started using what I have learned in what I do at home.  I use math at home when I help my dad build things.  I look forward to learning trigonometry and geometry in the future.

My Favorite Subject

January 12th, 2010

My favorite subject is spelling. I like spelling because it’s an easy subject, and because I’m kind of good at it. In my class we had a spelling bee to see who would  represent our team at the school bee. i was one one of the last  four. We could only send three people, so one of us had to get out. It was my second to last word and the girl next to me got out.  I was one of the three…..,but then Mrs. Stevenson told me that I had to spell the word magazine.  I have always spelled that word wrong and it was no surprise to me when I lost. But I’m still good at spelling and the homework is like practice for my next spelling bee. That’s why spelling is my favorite subject.               ~Brittney K.

Seasonal Stories at Houghton School

December 17th, 2009

On Wednesday, December 9th, our students had the opportunity to visit Houghton School to read their created seasonal stories.  It was the culmination of weeks of hard work for our sixth graders. It was a process that included brainstorming tasks, prewriting activities, revising and editing, typing using Microsoft Word, and finally illustrating.

Once at Houghton, our students had the opportunity to read their stories about ten times total to different kindergartners.  It was a blast and all of our students did such a wonderful job.  If you haven’t seen your student’s completed story/book, please make sure to ask them about it and take a peek!

Seasonal Stories

December 3rd, 2009

For our seasonal stories we had to think of six ideas about wintertime then pick one idea that you liked the best.   Then we had to write a rough draft and get it fixed by six people and your parents.   After that we typed the story. Finally, we started and finished our drawings. Today we picked a color for our front and back page then got it laminated. In my story ( Oh No! Rudolph’s Nose!) it took hours of fun but hard work to finish my book. Overall this was so far a very fun project.

Winter Stories

November 30th, 2009

We have been doing a fun project in writting the last 3-4 weeks. We have been making our winter stories. All of them are very different, from strories about santa, to real life traditions, we all have a different story to share. For example my story is about Santa losing  a ski on his sleigh. The best part is that we don’t  just get to take them home , we also get to read them to younger kids. I cant wait to see the final book when it is done!!!

Operation Christmas Child - Classroom Participation!

November 19th, 2009

One of my students, Kaylee, opened the doors to participating in Operation Christmas Child on this very blog a few weeks ago.  She really inspired me and our entire classroom help those in need.

Operation Christmas Child is a program operated through Samaritan’s Purse, an organization that provides international relief.  Within Operation Christmas Child, individuals pack a decorated shoe box with school supplies, toiletry items, and toys for children in need.

At the beginning of the week, we all brainstormed the kinds of things that a child in need may be wishing for.  Within days, we were all bringing in items to help.  Today, Thursday, November 19th, we completed our boxes.

I am so proud of the students and how hard they worked to create the boxes.  I have attached some photos below of the boxes and the creation of them.  If you are interested in making one yourself, please visit the following website:

Early Civilization Presentations

November 12th, 2009

In Social Studies lately, we have been learning about the early civilizations in Latin America.  These civilizations include the Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas.  Throughout our studies, the students actually become a member of one of these three civilizations.

Once a member, they were one of ten total students also in that grouping.  They then had to create a wide variety of projects, and then present them to the other civilizations.  Groups created Power Points, used the new Elmo machines, made maps, created and acted out skits, made posters, and made physical models of something relating to the civilization.

Below is a photo of some maps and posters that were created.  As you can see, the students did a great job!

SPOIL ALERT!!! FREAK THE MIGHTY!!!

October 31st, 2009

It is such a tragic ending in Freak the Mighty. I’m so disappointed that Freak had to die. But then again if he didn’t there would be no point to the story. I really love the story and am ashamed that something similar to that happened to that in real live. Over all the story was a fantastic book.

Red Ribbon Week and Other Notes - Mr. Foster’s Update

October 25th, 2009

Hello everyone!

We are all really enjoying our blog so far this year.  Everyone has had an opportunity to blog about their favorite book, and now the students are going to be doing many different kinds of posts.

Next week is Red Ribbon Week here at Heritage School.  Teachers were asked to make a video showcasing something they enjoy doing and proving that one does not need drugs or alcohol to have a good time.  One thing that I enjoy doing is Speed Stacking.  Here is a video from Hornet Tube that I created for Red Ribbon Week.  It involves some students, and we had a great time making it.

http://video.salineschools.com/play.php?vid=973

On another note, we have had two cadet teachers with us this year, and they have been very helpful.  Trip and Kristine, from Saline High School, are both thinking of entering the wonderful world of teaching.  Both would be great assets to the profession.

Have a great week, and I hope you are enjoying our blog!

Wisconsin

October 23rd, 2009

Wisconsin is a very beautiful when it comes to that big river with a speed boat and a huge waterfall! I was in Wisconsin and I was on a 2 hour speed tour and at the end of the tour the guy who wasn’t thinking almost made all of us die. I was crying and I was yelling at the guy that he should be fired! really he should. Anyway I want to the most expensive resturaunt in the world! it was really beautiful. I had spaghetti and choclate milk I think? and then at the end of the meal we got these steamed towlets they smelled really nice then my nose got disturebed so I didn’t like it that much. The resrturaunt had a dress code. It was that nice. There was another resturaunt it was called the Mexican Rose. It had a view of that vicious waterfall. By the end of the day we went to Noah’s Ark! It’s a big waterpark and thing I was most scared of  was the water slides but then I went on one of them and I totally enjoyed it . I couldn’t stop it was a blast! Did I menchon that  I was camping in the Wisconsin Dells and I played this weird ball on a string game. It was really fun cause I kept on winning. After that day we went into town and there was a fair going on. We went to the fair, but we didn’t do anything. My dad thought it was a rip-off when he knew wehad to pay for  the tickets. He thought it was “too expensive”  Talk about the chocolate he eats now that is expensive. Oh also there is an awesome part of Wisconsin and that is the best resturaunt called Moose Cheese or Cheesey Moose I dont know, but everything there is made of cheese. There is tons to choose from like: pizza, spaghetti, and more. MMMM I can already taste it.

Thankyou for reading.

Operation Christmas Child

October 22nd, 2009

Operation Christmas Child is a project that sends shoe boxes to needy children throughout the world.  Last year over 8 million shoe boxes were delivered to kids in over 160 countries.   My church participates in this project every year.  Last year we packed over 230 shoe boxes.  This year we are going for 500!  Things you put in a box are hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, washcloth, comb), small toys, school supplies (pencils, eraser, markers, crayons, rulers, glue sticks, notepads) and other things too.  I like packing boxes because I am sharing something with someone who has nothing.  Many of the children live in dangerous and scary situations, and many of them have been affected by natural disasters.  Sometimes it is the only Christmas present they have ever gotten.    Boxes are delivered all over the world by car, train, boat, plane, even elephants!   It is fun to think about where my box will end up and whose hands it will eventually be in.  Would you like to pack a box? I can tell you how!  See me if you or your family are interested in information about this project!

Carl’s favorite book series

October 20th, 2009

My favorite book series is the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. It’s about a boy called Harry Potter who the most dark wizard of all time tries to kill when he was one year old and failed and lost all his power in the process. But it turns out Voldemort (the dark wizard) isn’t dead. And now it seems that Harry is destined to kill Voldemort, whatever it takes.
