Skype Hits Saline!
Posted on December 14th, 2009 No commentsMary Ledford’s 4th grade class is actively dialoguing and interacting via Skype with another group of 4th grade students in Connecticut.
In social studies, students are studying regions. Since they just finished studying the Northeast region of the United States it seemed appropriate to have a Skype video conference with these students from Connecticut. In addition, both classes agreed to talk about the novels that they are reading in school. Saline Students are reading Roald Dahl books. He is a British author of many popular books including James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, and Matilda. The Saline students had a number of talking points during this Skype sessions including:
1. Ask about climate, storms, weather in Connecticut
2. Share Vocabulary from your story
3. Have a conversation about your book
4. Make a prediction as to what will happen next in the story
The students asked some great questions and did an excellent job of interacting with their 4th grade Connecticut peer.
I talk a lot about engagement in my curriculum blog. This Skype activity was a real showcase of what can happen when you engage kids in a unique manner in a full blown text dialogue!
Very impressive!
