Many of you may have heard us talking about our “Lucy Days” around Harvest from time to time.  Three times a year, at each grade level, we ask one of our teachers to share a Lucy Calkins writing lesson with the rest of the grade level staff.  All five teachers and I meet before the lesson to talk about what we are going to see and to share a “framing” question that the teacher who is modeling wants specific feedback on during the post-observation session.  We learn a lot about how we teach writing.  It takes a lot of courage and professionalism to open your classroom up for your colleagues.  I have learned more about our writing program and how we teach our students from these professional development exercises than I thought possible.

The Brave

The roll call from rump to head… Terrant of Nelson Safaris, Mrs. Kraft (very brave), Mrs. York, Mrs. Hardecki, Mrs. McMasters, Mr. Williams, Mrs Pilz, Mr. Sharon, Mrs. Ringel, Mrs. Needham, and Nelson himself.  This is how big the Burmese Pythons can get in the Everglades.  Thank goodness for seasonal snow!

This week March is Reading Month is kicking off with another visit from Nelson and his traveling zoo.  Check out the video clips below for a look at what creatures are in the presentation. This year’s theme is biomes around the world and include desert, grassland, forest and marine creatures.

Math Night!

Posted by Lester Sharon on Feb 26, 2010 in Uncategorized

If you didn’t get the chance to join us at Math Night last Wednesday, here are some pics.  Our PTA volunteers did a bang up job putting on the event.  We had a blast!

Expanding My Horizons

Posted by Lester Sharon on Feb 18, 2010 in Uncategorized

This is my first foray into posting videos on the blog.  It only took 3 tech support personnel and 3 hours to teach me how to do it, but I think I have it down.  (Not bad for someone who still has Oregon Trail on Apple II floppy disc in his desk at home.) Below is a clip of our lunchroom here at Harvest.  I think my infatuation with football is starting to have an adverse effect on our students.  The skills demonstrated are not found in the Michigan Curriculum Framework.

A Special Place

Posted by Lester Sharon on Feb 11, 2010 in Uncategorized

The Harvest community has done it again.  You have raised over $1,700.00 in support of Haitian relief during the week-long Change for Haiti drive.  Ms. Klump’s class is grateful for your support and I am very proud of both our generous families and of this special group of second graders who came up with the idea to help after reading about the tragedy.  Events like this serve as a reminder that the Harvest community represents the very best in all of us.  I’m proud to call myself a Harvest Hornet because of the wonderful families and staff that walk through our doors every morning.  Thank you!

Super Bowl Trivia!

Mrs. Tew's 2010 Champs!

In what’s fast becoming a tradition here at Harvest, the third and fourth graders competed in Super Bowl trivia this Friday in the lunchroom.  Questions centered around Hall of Fame Quarterbacks and Super Bowl Stadiums.  Class averages were factored into the scores and winners will be announced on Monday after the big game.  An informal and decidedly unscientific poll of students showed that the Colts will squeak out a victory over the Saints.  We’ll find out on Sunday!

Not to be outdone, our first and second graders enjoyed a game of NFL Referee Simon Says.  Ask your first or second grade child to show you how a chop block is called!

Is that Bart Starr or Brett Favre? Alas, no Lions quarterbacks were used in Super Bowl Trivia. 2010 is our year!

Winter Survival!

Posted by Lester Sharon on Feb 5, 2010 in Uncategorized

It’s every fourth grader’s nightmare. It’s the dead of winter and you’re lost in the woods far from help.  What do you do? What do you do?

Well, if you are a Harvest fourth grader, you do what you have to do in order to survive.  That means building a shelter, finding your bearings, and starting a fire.  That’s exactly what our students learned this week in the woods behind the high school.  The students had a great time building debris huts and starting fires on the frozen ground. Lunch was served frontier-style and cooked over an open flame.  Congratulations on surviving your day in the frozen north!

Help For Haiti

Posted by Lester Sharon on Feb 1, 2010 in Uncategorized

Ms. Klump’s second grade class is coordinating a “Change for Haiti” fundraiser to aid with the earthquake relief effort.  WDIV Channel 4 is sponsoring the program along with local schools.  The students came up with the idea to raise funds here at Harvest.  The donation jugs are located in the main lobby and will be left out all week starting on February first.  Great work second graders!!!

The snow is piling up and indoor recess is becoming all to common so Winter Olympics trivia seemed like the perfect choice for January (actually December make-up) Quiz Bowl in the cafeteria.  Here are the third and fourth grade winners!
